The term ‘video installation’ can cover many facets – for all manner of purposes. Maybe you own a take away, and you want a flat screen in your waiting area – you could just mount a screen on the wall, but why stop there? Your customers have a focal point – so maximise its use, with some advertising of your own! Perhaps you own a hotel – and are looking to upgrade now the digital switchover is taking place – signal distribution to every room, plus the supply and installation of a suitable screen is something you may be looking at. Or maybe you’re about to open the hottest new bar in town – why just hang pictures on the wall? Dare to be different – pixel mapping of projected images can make your walls, floors and ceilings come alive and make you the talking point of the circuit!

That brings us onto a sometimes overlooked area of installation that has to be addressed as part of your obligations as a venue owner – safety. Many of the bracketry available for domestic LCD / CRT / plasma screens and projectors are not up to the rigours of commercial use – we use companies such as Unicol, the UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of LCD, Plasma and Projector mounting solutions including:
- Wall mounts
- Swing arms
- Ceiling suspension brackets
- Trolleys
- LCD stands
- Video walls
They also have a Special Projects Department that designs and manufactures bespoke items for major audiovisual installations. This means your one off is tested above and beyond the level required and keeps you compliant with your responsibilities.

Of course, it’s no good just having screens and projectors all over the place – you need to be able to control them. We use tried and tested hardware and software from industry standard market leaders such as Kramer Electronics – as well as our own deveoped hardware and software solutions. Clever boxes of tricks like the Penguin Media Server can take video feeds, apply effects, image manipulation, digital keystoning, etc, split the image across multiple screens and output directly to LCD / plasma panels or projectors - don’t just confine yourself to a 4:3 or 16:9 white box, think outside it!
